Enhancing Pride

When you are proud, you feel good, right? How proud is your four year old when they show you a picture they created in school that day? The conversation in our house usually goes like this…

Casper: “Mummy, look at my picture!”
(I look very enthusiastically at the scribble, trying to make out a picture of a  dog)
Me: “That’s AMAZING Casper. Now tell me about the picture.” (That’s me asking in a roundabout way what the picture actually is!)
Casper: “It’s a volcano with lava exploding out of it. At the bottom is our house about to get smashed by the lava!”
Me: “WOW, that’s AMAZING. Casper, are we in the picture?”
Casper: “Yes, in the air, as we have escaped on a dragon, but Daddy has been eaten by the whale.”
Me “That’s AMAZING, I can see that!” (AMAZING is my favourite word, BTW)

I guess what I’m trying to get across is that what may look like a scribble to us, is actually a masterpiece to them. This creation has required bucket loads of artistic, emotional, social, cognitive and physical skills. Now don’t forget to tick the very last box, PRIDE! As parents, we can enhance that pride, firstly by discussing their creation and secondly by allowing it to be showcased. If it’s a picture, we might decide to display it on the fridge and if it’s a model, we might decide to put it on the mantelpiece. But if it’s one of our colour in tops, we can show it off by wearing it, of course!
